Get Volunteering in Genealogy!

Volunteers’ Week takes place from 1st-7th June every year and it’s a good time to think about how you may want to combine volunteering with your love for family history.

Volunteer at Your Local Archives

Volunteering at the local archives is a great way to get way to get to know your local archives behind the scenes and to help fellow genealogists.  Roles could be transcribing documents, helping in the search room, giving guided tours, cataloguing books, scanning documents and being on reception.  To find your local archive in the UK   http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/find-an-archive

Get involved in your local Family History Society

Most family history societies have committees that will wlecome new members.  Roles could involve dealing with membership, helping to write/ edit the journal, running their website, doing look ups for members, booking speakers.   Also many societies have transcription projects that will need help or memorial transcription projects that will involve getting out and about.  To find your local family history society in the UK try http://www.ffhs.org.uk/members2/alpha.php

A number of not for profit organisations are looking for volunteers to transcribe, index, develop web pages or get involve on their boards.  These include:

Blogging about your family history experiences may help others learn new research techniques or help you get in touch with your own relatives.
