About: Adam Winstanley
I specialise in Irish genealogy and also in military records (particularly World War 1). My main academic research interest is in applying data science to multiple genealogical sources in order to extract extra information about individuals and families. I have wider interests in the analysis of tempral and spatial data. I completed an MSc in Genealogy with Strathclyde University in 2016. My thesis topics were on "Irish Census Substitutes" and "Identifying people on the Morpeth Roll." Before that, I graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computing) and Archaeology in 1978. I worked as an archaeologist and cartographer with Ordnance Survey Northern Ireland for several years. I gained an MSc and PhD in Computer Science from Queen's University Belfast in 1987 and 1991 respectively. I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Computer Science at University of Ulster for 3 years. I was a lecturer at Queen's University before taking up post at Maynooth in 1995. I was Head of the Department of Computer Science at Maynooth 2007 - 2018.
