Description

Based close to the National Archives in London, I work as a professional genealogist and historical researcher in the United Kingdom. I offer genealogical research of the highest standard to clients whose ancestors lived in the United Kingdom, including international clients. With many years of relevant research experience and a PhD in History degree from the University of Cambridge, I have conducted research concerning an enormous variety of genealogical and historical topics in archives and libraries across the United Kingdom and in the United States. I am therefore well placed to solve problems in British genealogy through meticulous documentary research. I also give talks about genealogy as well as writing articles and other publications about various related subjects. Please follow the link to my website for further details.

Archival Research

I am especially well placed to access the records in the National Archives and in other repositories in London. I am also happy to discuss travelling to any archives throughout the United Kingdom. I have experience of conducting on-site archival research in the following 20 counties in England: Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, County Durham, Devon, East Sussex, Essex, Greater London, Hampshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Northumberland, Oxfordshire, Staffordshire, Suffolk, Surrey, Warwickshire and Wiltshire.

I specialise in researching families in England, but I also have experience of researching Welsh, Scottish and Irish families.

I am on the National Maritime Museum’s list of independent researchers.

Public Speaking

I am an experienced public speaker, having given talks to various audiences in the UK and the USA. I explain the topics that I know about with clarity and rigour, and I am able to adapt my talks to meet the needs and interests of particular audiences. I am listed in the Family History Federation’s A-Z of Speakers and on SpeakerNet. I offer a broad range of talks about genealogy and house history. Please see my website for more information.

Talk Recordings

I presented two webinars at RootsTech 2024, one about ancestors in London and another on Anglican ancestors in England. Follow these links to watch recordings of the webinars:

Metropolitan Ancestors: Finding Families in Georgian and Victorian London

Beyond Parish Registers: Tracing your Anglican Ancestors in England

In 2023, I contributed a video talk to the ‘All About That Place’ event, organised to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Society for One-Place Studies. I discussed an 1841 tithe map of a village in Surrey. You can watch this video here:
