Description

Best known as the founder of #AncestryHour, the weekly genealogy community chat that ran for nearly 10 years on Twitter, I am also a qualified family and local historian, writer, and mentor.  You may also have read my articles in Family Tree Magazine, attended a workshop, tried the tips in my palaeography primer, or read some of the hints and tips in my monthly blog ‘Border Ramblings’.

Trading as Borders Ancestry, I undertake research projects across England and Scotland and have specialist knowledge of the historic border counties of Northumberland, Durham, and the Scottish Borders.   I offer a comprehensive research service that includes:

  • Family History – From simple ‘lookups’, to extended family trees with full-colour family histories, I specialise in uncovering the human stories.
  • Local History – Knowledge of communities, events, land, property, social customs, and political and economic change adds historical context to your research.
  • Palaeography – A specialist in transcription and interpretation of old documents including Latin.
  • Mentoring and Tutoring – To help you get the most from your research whether it be getting you started or keeping your research on track.  Sessions are delivered one-to-one online.
  • Talks  – Available for talks, presentations or to host workshops on a wide range of topics aimed at beginners to more advanced levels of experience.
  • DNA – The introduction of DNA has opened the world of family history to a far greater audience than ever before.  I cover everything from simple queries, advice regarding testing options, getting to grips with your results, and helping you with cousin matching
  • Writing  – From articles for publication on a wide range of topics to helping you turn your research into a narrative to be enjoyed by future generations of your family.
  • Ancestral Travel – Assist with planning and preparation to maximise the purpose and enjoyment of your trip to help you achieve your research goals and make your ancestral visit an amazing experience!

Every family has a story to tell, and everyone’s journey into their ancestral past is unique!  All research undertaken is tailored to the requirements of each individual client.

Experience

  • 2013 current
Founder and Owner at Borders Ancestry
A fourth generation genealogist with in excess of 30 years of research experience. I am also the custodian of an extensive private archive containing the research into many ‘Borders’ families begun by my great-grandfather’s brother a solicitor and Deputy Steward to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in Durham. This research has passed through the generations and is continued by myself today. In 2012 my opportunity came to turn my passion into a business helping others discover their ancestral ties to the Borderlands. In January 2013 ‘Borders Ancestry’ was born and since then I have successfully helped many clients with their ancestral journey.
