Born Aberdeen; brought up in Dumfries; Edinburgh University; career in London and around the world. Lives in Surrey.

Lecturer and writer of articles on family history. Founder member and first Chairman of the Register of Qualified Genealogists until 2018 – http://qualifiedgenealogists.org.  Deputy Editor of The Journal of Genealogy and Family History – http://www.qualifiedgenealogists.org/ojs/index.php/JGFH.

Author of that timeless classic The Alexanders of Bourtie, 1696-1886 (ANESFHS, 2012 – Bruce Henderson Award). Also author of the scintillating Referencing for Genealogists: Sources and Citation, published by the History Press in May 2018 .  Administrator of the Mewburn one-name study;  http://mewburn.one-name.net and of the Mewborn one-name study; http://mewborn.one-name.net.  The Mewborn early history has been published in the Journal of Genealogy at DoI: https://doi.org/10.24240/23992964.2020.1234528.  The history of the Mewburns has been published in 2022 as Mewburn and Meaburn: a history. This is a 660 page tome with a vast array of references covering all the Mewburns who have ever lived and died.  It is available free as a downloadable pdf in the Documents section of the website http://mewburn.one-name.net.
