Description

Joan has been researching her own family for some years now; it has taken her to records in many parts of the UK and abroad, including a family from Yorkshire who walked the Utah trail in the mid-1800s as part of the Mormon’s settlement in the USA.

Joan also has a one name study for the surname Sarginson registered with the Guild of One Name Studies. While she lives in Oxfordshire now, her own family come from the East Riding of Yorkshire and this remains a key interest for her, together with WWI memorials, religious history, and houses/estates.

Joan provides individual mentoring for people carrying out their own research as well as short talks to local groups. She has a Postgraduate Diploma in Genealogy, Palaeography and Heraldic Studies from the University of Strathclyde. The projects she undertook included: a migration study into the Yorkshire family who walked the Utah trail in USA, a buildings study on the house her husband’s grandfather recuperated in after he was shot in WWI and her final project considered the making and meaning of the WWI war memorial in St Helen’s Churchyard in Escrick, Yorkshire. Joan has also started the MSc at Strathcylde.
