Principal Family History Specialist at The National Archives
I joined the National Archives in 1998 at the late-lamented and much-missed Family Records Centre (FRC) where I was appointed to the role of Development Officer, with responsibility for staff training and publicity and for developing an events programme. On the closure of the FRC, I moved to Kew and joined the Reader Services Department and was appointed to the new role of Principal Family History Specialist. I left the National Archives in 2010. In 2019 I was awarded a Fellowship of the Society of Genealogists and in 2022 I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. I have written a number of family history books including the bestselling beginner’s guide Easy Family History and Pen & Sword’s Birth, Marriage & Death Records (with Audrey Collins) and, with Peter Christian, I am the co-author of Census: the Family Historian’s Guide. I am also a regular contributor to Family Tree Magazine where I run the Family Tree Academy. -
1985-1998 and 2010-present
Senior Researcher at Lifelines Research
I first started my own research business (Lifelines Research) in 1985 and (apart from a 12-year spell at the Family Records Centre/National Archives) I have been running the business ever since. Over the years, I have helped many hundreds of clients to uncover the hidden details of their family history.
